No pit-stop for the Timeline team as we rev up for this week’s broadcast in Belgium
Supporting Sky Sports F1, Timeline go full throttle in the most prestigious and glamorous motorsport championship in the world. Since 2007 Timeline has provided location broadcast solutions for the Formula One. 2012 saw Timeline take it up a gear, providing dual servies for Sky Sports and the BBC.
Onsite at the races, all feeds from the host broadcaster (FOM) are ingested via EVS XT-3 servers onto near-line storage. The feeds are logged live, using IP Directors, creating a highly searchable archive. This is directly linked to logs in London, provided by Sky Sports. All ENG footage is digitally captured into the IP Director Database.
During the live broadcast, the IP Director system enables the production team to call up any incident from the past or present and view it from multiple angles. It can then be sent to the on-air server for immediate broadcast and presenter discussion and analysis.
The instant access to the archive also provides an enviable production tool for the creative teams crafting the high-end pre-show features.
In addition to this, we provide support for Sky Sports F1 at each race with two engineers, supporting eight Avid systems, three of which are Symphony feature suites and include Cinema 4D and After Effects, two are fast turn around media composers, and three ingest/ remote editing machines. All of which are used to cut features for the weekend broadcast.
The shared edit facilities are connected to a 32TB Avid ISIS and 300TB Omneon Mediagrid which stores F1 archive going back to before 1980, forming one of the most comprehensive digital video libraries of the Formula One in the world.
This famed international championship has proved to be a showcase for Timeline’s unparalleled flexibility in tapeless production on location.
