Media Systems Engineering Manager

About the Role

The successful candidate will join the Timeline technology team and will be based at the BT Sport Studios in Stratford, East London. In this role, you will support the post-production and media management systems for the BT Sports facility, monitor and optimise the performance of media and server storage systems. As well as ensuring the effective operation of media systems from a technical and workflow perspective.

Main Duties

  • Responsible for the post-production systems and media management systems for BT Sport including Editing, Sound Mixing, Grading, PAM, MAM, Transcoding, IPD suite of tools, metadata schemas, workflow design and interpreting client requests
  • Manage a team of post-production support staff (permanent and freelance)
  • Plan and implement the post-production processes supporting the cost-effective delivery of services to BT’s own and third-party production teams
  • Accountable for the purchase, ordering and correct invoicing of equipment, support services, software, and repairs
  • Responsible for leading the training and development within the Post Team on the core equipment and software under your brief to ensure a consistent quality of service delivery at all times
  • Responsible for keeping Timeline and BT Sport at the forefront of creative and cost effective solutions that service an ambitious and industry leading broadcaster
  • Develop workflows for complex operations that take into account the available technical and human resources
  • Ensure consistent delivery of workflows, service levels and metadata structures
  • Ensure satisfactory staff and freelance rostering and cover at all times.
  • Work closely with production teams and other technical departments to ensure that the operational needs of BT Sport and its production partners are effectively met
  • Ensure that technical faults are resolved quickly, or alternative solutions implemented, so that the broadcast output and program delivery is not impacted
  • Lead and delegate to the team of Post Support Engineers and prioritise the daily support workload to meet operational deadlines and production deadlines
  • Support all technical installation and project work
  • Develop and implement processes to address technical faults and problems in a timely and professional manner
  • Escalate issues to the Head of Production Technology in a timely manner

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Must have a extensive engineering experience in a similar broadcast environment
  • Be an enthusiastic manager of people, developing skills and imparting high standards
  • High level of IT competency including a fundamental understanding of IT and TCIP networking infrastructure and servers
  • Excellent knowledge of video and audio systems, post-production workflow codecs and effects plug-ins
  • Experience of providing clear documentation of projects, repairs and upgrades
  • A positive, enthusiastic manner with the ability to react tactfully and sympathetically to requests from production staff and clients
  • Customer awareness and good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent project management and problem solving skills
  • Able to monitor and report on the progress of tasks in a constructive and appropriate manner
  • Knowledge and experience of vision, sound, routing, communication, and computer systems as they relate to a television studio or broadcast environment
  • Able to make critical assessment of television pictures and waveforms as necessary
  • You must be prepared to develop your skills to cover all aspects of the broadcast chain
  • Self-motivated and organised
  • In-depth knowledge of file-based formats, workflows, and technologies
  • Experience of supporting and trouble-shooting Avid interplay and /or EVS IPD systems
  • Comprehensive appreciation of end-to-end production processes and a good understanding of live transmission chain
  • Adaptable and flexible to undertake new tasks required by the department and production
  • A good knowledge of the following is desirable:
  • Digital video signals, standards and processing
  • Digital video files, formats, codecs and transforms
  • Best practices in storage and transfer of files
  • High level of understanding and experience of dealing with a modern broadcast IT environment including:
  • Multi-VLAN networks
  • Multi-packet size networks
  • Active/Open Directory environments
  • Experience of supporting and troubleshooting one of the following specialist systems:
  • EVS Ingest/Editing/Playout systems
  • Extensive knowledge of Avid systems

This is a Monday to Friday role which will require some flexibility to meet position needs.
