Life as a Graduate Broadcast Sound Engineer

Ella Ozsanlav

How did you hear about our Graduate programme?

I was referred to the Timeline website by a friend who found it on a Google search.

How was the assessment day?

Considering how nervous I was for the day, it all went very smoothly. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, including the other candidates. It was clearly explained how the day was going to pan out, so we knew what to expect. It was great to have a full tour of the facilities at Here East. The interviews were quite intense as there were two, one after another, but Grishma, Malcolm and Will were very understanding of that and made me feel very at ease. All in all, an exciting day. Oh, and we got lots of free pizza!

What was your first impression?

I instantly picked up on how friendly everyone was, which made it seem like a nice place to work. Having never been in a television studio before, I found the tour of the facilities very impressive and exciting. I remember thinking it was a bit of a maze as it was so big – something I’ve got used to now after 6 months.

How are you finding the programme so far?

So far, my experience has been really good. It’s been very hands on and everyone has been patient and understanding in helping me learn. Getting my head around all the equipment and the various paths the audio takes to get to and from places has been a challenge, but a lot of fun.

Did you have any prior broadcast experience?

Nope! My degree was quite technical and included audio electronics, programming and digital signal processing, but mostly for audio in live music events. My background prior to this was in sound engineering for venues and outdoor events.

What have you learned during the first 6 months?

So much – I wouldn’t even know where to begin!

Do you like the team?

My team is absolutely great. They’ve been very kind and patient as I’ve been getting to grips with things. They’re also incredibly knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions I have, however silly they are.

Would you recommend the Timeline Graduate Programme?

Yes absolutely!

The best thing about Timeline is:

Probably the people!
